The Times of Israel said on Saturday that about 160,000 people took part in the protest in Tel Aviv, and tens of thousands took to the streets across Israel. The newspaper cited the organization of the demonstration as saying that about 400,000 Israelis demonstrated against the legal reform across the country on Saturday.
According to the newspaper, the police used water cannons to disperse the demonstrators in Tel Aviv.
At least four people were arrested in Tel Aviv during clashes with law enforcement, The Times of Israel quoted a police spokesman as saying.
In January, Israel’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin announced a package of legal reforms that would limit the Supreme Court’s authority by giving the cabinet control over the selection of new judges, as well as not allowing the Knesset to overrule the decisions of the courts and the majority of the people. . In mid-February, the Israeli parliament approved the first part of the law. Opponents of Reform argue that it will destroy democracy in Israel and put the country on the brink of a public and fundamental problem.
The Israeli judicial system has been in place since the founding of the state in 1948. According to this system, the Supreme Court provides constitutional oversight, since Israel does not have a constitution and a constitutional court. Government decisions are largely controlled by the Supreme Court, which can be overturned if necessary.
